Texas has secured the No. 2 spot among the states for woman-owned businesses, taking into account the number of businesses, the size of the work force and the amount of sales. Only California ranks above Texas for women entrepreneurs, according to a study by the Center for Women's Business Research. Nearly half of all private U.S. companies, or 10.6 million, are majority-owned by women, according to the study. U.S. businesses owned by women employ 19.1 million people and generate nearly $2.5 trillion in sales. "These businesses are a critical component of the national economy, not only in terms of their sheer numbers, but also in terms of their impact on employment and revenue generation," says Sharon Hadary, executive director of the Center for Women's Business Research. Florida, New York, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Washington round out the top 10 states for woman-owned businesses. San Francisco-based banking giant Wells Fargo & Co. (NYSE: WFC) sponsored the study. The Washington, D.C.-based Center for Women's Business Research conducts research and provides information about women and business.

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VII) prohibits race, color, religion, sex, and national origin discrimination. Title VII applies to:

Equal Pay Act of 1963 (EPA) prohibits wage discrimination between men and women in substantially equal jobs within the same establishment. The EPA applies to:

  • most employers with one or more employees

These laws prohibit employment discrimination based on race, color, sex, religion, national origin, age, disability, and prohibit retaliation for opposing job discrimination, filing a charge, or participating in proceedings under these laws.
